Great news regarding Abruzzo’s brown bears!
The electric fences that the WWF donated alongside the planting of apple trees have been successful in keeping the bears (Orsi) firmly inside the parameters of the park. This means they are out of ‘legal’ shot from the poachers & poisioners who don’t appreciate the impact of their omnivorious diet on their small farming fortunes.
Today it was reported by the Italian newspaper Corrier della Sera that a bear census taken in 2008 before the bears hibernated could mean up to 100 if they all wake up and have their respective cubs, fingers crossed!
It is highly unlikely that you will see a marsican bear on your holiday, they are in affect an ‘invisible attraction’, but part of the joy of a holiday in Abruzzo is knowing just by your mere presence in the area, you are aiding the welcome conservation of this endangered species & helping to keep them well out of threats way.
