Abruzzo Holiday House Rental

Long-term Abruzzo Rental Cottage for 2 People

Are you looking to rent long-term in Abruzzo Italy?  Perhaps you are looking to buy in Abruzzo, wanting the opportunity to look around and find out what is right for you, or are looking to rediscover your Abruzzese ancestry and life in Abruzzo with an immersion heritage holiday to explore your Italian roots or your Grandparents’ region; or it could be that you’re a writer looking for a self-catering retreat to rent in Italy where you can finally finish off that book.

Unspoilt, Sedate and Charming

Casetta Lucciola (Little House of the Firefly), named after the languid fireflies that pay their night time visits to the orte (kitchen gardens), of Bascianella in the  province of Teramo, is owned by the LifeinAbruzzo blogging team.  It is available for long-term rent for periods from 6 weeks up to 6 months.    A sympathetically restored and whitewashed stone and wooden-beamed Abruzzo cottage, this cosy 1-bedroomed abode with its small terrace is almost 160 years old but has all mod-cons like ADSL wifi and gas central heating.

The open-plan first floor to our Abruzzo rental is home to a fully equipped modern wooden kitchen including fitted dishwasher & fridge, gas hob/electric oven and kitchen table to seat 4 and a seating area with 2 armchairs with small open fireplace.  The open staircase leads to a relaxed spacious mezzanine-style study/living space that leads into a double bedroom with balcony that looks out onto the mountains. The modern small bathroom is equipped with a shower and bidet, with a washing machine just outside it.

Foodie Heaven

If you’re a foodie you can look forward to enjoying your glass of Montepulciano d’Abruzzo with produce from the local van deliveries.   An assortment of fresh breads, cakes and pizza are delivered by the daily baker van, organic local vegetables produced by local small holdings are delivered every other day, while the fish, cheese & yoghurt vans come on a Friday, providing almost all you need virtually to the door.  In the summer the village is serviced by a fantastic ice-cream van, in the winter by the Sicilian Orange man, and the local bee-keeper sells to the village in September.  The local supermarket and butcher is a 5 minute car-journey, larger towns with markets held on Wednesdays and Thursdays are a 20 minute-drive away.

A Little History & Culture

The farm village of Bascianella is 427 metres above sea level and dates back to the early 1600s, currently home to approximately 60 people. It sits upon the border of Italy’s largest nature reserve – ‘Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park’ (1 Km away), underneath the Corno Grand , the Apennine’s highest peak.   The Gran Sasso range are ancient limestone & dolomite craggy mountains.  Bascianella overlooks the lush Teramo valleys and directly down to Lucrezia Borgia’s C16th campout, Castiglione della Valle.  Unspoilt, charming, friendly, sleepy are just a few of the adjectives that pulled us to buy our cosy mountain retreat within this traditional Abruzzo village.

Tossicia, the former capital of the 2 Sicilies in Abruzzo is just under 15 minutes’ drive away. For those looking for a little bit more of an active break in Abruzzo, perhaps to go walking in the Gran Sasso Mountains, step outside the door and the hiking begins.  If your bag is skiing, Prati de Tivo is a 40 minute drive away depending on the weather and for those of you who are sun-bunnies nip down to the sandy private beaches at Roseto degli Abruzzi, Pineto or Guilianova on the Adriatic Coast – all are just a 40-minute drive away, all hold Blue Flags and Green flags and have soft soft sandbanks for those with sensitive feet that don’t like walking on pebbles. (Dogs are not allowed on the beaches in Abruzzo from 15th May thru to 31st October).

The village is serviced by buses to the central bus stations of Montorio al Vomano and Teramo.  These depart at 6.45, 2.30 and return at 2.15 and 7.15.  Cost to Teramo at time of writing is €6.

The nearest autostrada,  A24 exits are both a 20-minute drive-away.
