Touring Club Italiano Books & Abruzzo Archive

Touring Club Italiano books provide the perfect lens for zooming into the history of Italy, and in particular Abruzzo.

The organisation was founded as a not-for-profit association in 1894 in Milan. Its aim was to spread and develop the social and cultural virtues of tourism and promoting a form of tourism based on awareness and responsibility.  Today the Touring Club Italiano has more than 250,000 members and a network of more than 3,300 volunteers.  It owns a photographic archive comprising more than 350,000 prints of black & white images from the late 1800s to the 1970s. Subjects include tourism, transport, roads, hospitality, culture, fashion, traditions, folklore, and work. A precious repertoire, unique for its size and the period of Italian history it covers.

Touring Club Italiano in Abruzzo

The Touring Club Italiano’s Abruzzo books can take you on a journey back to a picturesque 1922 day trip in Scanno, or transport you to the sixties in the quaint lanes of Salcito, Campobasso, where a woman, a goat, and a donkey simply bask in the sun. Imagine resonating with the harmonious tunes of three ‘zampognari‘ in their classic attire, bagpipes in hand, from the vibrant 1940s. Dive into the intimate moments of Scanno‘s women, as captured by the legendary Gianni Berengo Gardin. And how can one forget the striking portrait of young shepherd Sebastiano Di Cesare by Alfredo Trombetta in 1948?

These captivating snapshots of history, alongside many many more, await within the pages of the Touring Club Italiano books. If you’re seeking a tangible touch of nostalgia, we wholeheartedly encourage you to seek out and purchase these evocative collections, richly adorned with the artistry of the era’s top photographers. Among the Touring Club Italiano books, the images by Pepi Merisio truly stand out for us. His lens masterfully captures the mood with every click.

Discover a century’s tales – the timeless attire, evolving lifestyles, tools of yesteryears, musical instruments and the beating heartbeat of those charming streets. For Touring Club Italiano book enthusiasts and “photographiles” alike, the 1948 edition Attraverso l’Italia. Vol. 14 : Abruzzo e Molise and the brilliant 1970 release ABRUZZO, MOLISE are must-haves. While the text unfurls in Italian, trust us, it’s the pictures that’ll have you mesmerised.
