Our recommended Abruzzo rambles & walks in the Gran Sasso & Maiella Mountains, including Italy’s highest mountain The Corno Grande, 2912 masl.
Both the Gran Sasso & Maiella Mountains are craggy limestone that lightly touch the clouds with snow-topped peaks for 6 months of the year. Spanning 200 miles of Abruzzo, they are criss-crossed with excellently sign-posted treks, which lead from the verdant green valleys up to mountain pastures & the peaks themselves. Curiosity & quick detours abound as you pass medieval villages studded into mountain sides, often making you wonder how & why they built a village where they did…you just have to find out!
It’s the perfect area for walkers, climbers & horse-riders and the inquisitive and perfect if you are bored of the beach which is just 30 minutes away by car.
