Abruzzo’s abundant wildlife flourishes, no doubt due to the fact that 1/3 of the habitat is protected parkland – ‘Abruzzo is Europe’s biggest park’.
Walking in the lofty Apennine Mountains’ forests & juniper framed pastures you can enjoy the fact that you’ve a shared environment with shy WWF-protected Marsican Brown Bears, wolves, Chamois & red deer & of course more than a few boisterous boars.
High in the skies enjoying Abruzzo thermals you can frequently spot Golden Eagles, Peregrine Falcons & Alpine Chough birds of prey. For those more earthbound look out for the dancing Apollo Butterfly & 100 of its sister species including the Blue-spot Hairstreak Butterfly.
Abruzzo olive groves & beech woods host Firecrests, Crossbills, Serins and Coal Tits & fauna that includes Lady’s Slipper & Pyramidal Orchids. Truffles (Tartufo) yes plenty of those too … the delicious black, white, Muscat & Scorzon.
